What is Tizen OS(OPERATING SYSTEM)?

Governed by a Technical Steering Group that includes Intel, Samsung, and Fujitsu, among others, Tizen is an open-source, Linux-based operating system designed for use on smartphones, smart TVs, wearables, and in-vehicle infotainment devices.

What was originally the LiMo Foundation became known as the Tizen Association in January 2012, and shortly thereafter Tizen 1.0, or Larkspur, was released in April of 2012. Tizen 2.0 Magnolia was released in February of 2013. Version 2.3 alpha was released in June of 2014. These older versions of Tizen OS come in distinct profiles for each of the aforementioned devices, but with the impending release of Tizen 3.0, all profiles will be built using the shared infrastructure Tizen Common. Because Tizen is under open source governance, original device manufacturers may modify existing profiles according to the needs of the devices they manufacture or develop entirely new custom profiles based on Tizen Common.

The Samsung NX300M smart camera, released in South Korea in October of 2013 and then in the US in March of 2014, was the first consumer product running Tizen OS. Other Tizen devices include Systena’s 10-inch ARM-based Tizen tablet, released exclusively in Japan in October 2013 as part of a Tizen developer kit; Samsung’s Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches  released in April 2014; and the soon-to-be-released Samsung Z SF-Z910F, which will debut in Russia.

Samsung’s increasing investment into the Tizen mobile operating system is part and parcel of the company’s shift away from Google’s Android. The company’s biggest obstacle, however, is the concern over compatibility, since the majority of mobile apps are developed for iOS and Android operating systems. OpenMobile’s Application Compatibility Layer for Tizen is coming soon, which will allow non-Tizen apps to run more smoothly on Tizen systems.
